Chromebook Sales Doubled, Google Announced “chromeOS.dev”

August 12, Google announced “chromeOS.dev”, a website that provides resources for developing apps for ChromeOS. In response to the Chromebook’s growing popularity, Google aims to encourage app development.

chromeOS.dev is a website that provides a collection of information and tools necessary for developing apps for ChromeOS. Designed to help developers, designers, product managers, and business leaders, it shares technical information, for example, on how to make an Android app run on Chrome OS, and code samples of popular apps, and releases latest news and product announcements. Currently, it only supports English and Spanish, but it is to support other languages soon.

The Linux (Beat) on Chrome OS Terminal brings personalized features. It lets you multitask and switch between multiple projects by using windows and tabs, and customize the Terminal theme. Terminal settings are also redesigned.

Some of the Chromebooks can now run a full version of the Android Emulator. This allows developers to test apps on any Android version and device without needing the actual hardware. Developers with Chrome OS M81 and above can deploy and test apps directly on their Chromebooks.

According to Google, from March to June 2020, their Chromebook unit sales grew 127% year over year. Compared to the rest of the notebook category whose increase was by 40%, Chromebooks were sold three times as much.
