“WordPress 5.5 (Eckstine)” Released, adds support for lazy loading

August 11, developers behind the open-source blog software “WordPress” rolled out the latest version “WordPress 5.5 (Eckstine)“.

WordPress is a project who develops and open sources content management system like blogs. It is written in PHP and uses MySQL database. It is licensed under the GPL v2.

WordPress 5.5 is the latest release of the version 5 series, released at the end of 2019. The three major areas this release focuses on are speed, SEO, and security. This release was named “Eckstine” in honor of the jazz singer Billy Eckstein.

WordPress now adds support for Lazy Loading. Thanks to this new feature, it now feels faster to show posts including images. On mobile, lazy loading prevents browsers from loading files that are meant for other devices, which helps to preserve battery life.

WordPress now works better with search engines as WordPress 5.5 includes an XML sitemap by default. This helps search engines quickly discover important pages.

In regards to security, it now allows you to choose whether to update plugins and themes automatically. You can also turn auto-update on or off for each plugin. Even updating manually is now made easier by simply uploading a ZIP file.

Block editor is added with new features: new block patterns, which makes it simple to create complex layout using combinations of text and media, new block directory, which makes it easier to find the block you need, and other features.
