Mozilla Announced Layoffs, revenue impacted by coronavirus pandemic

August 11, Mozilla Corporation, the maker of “Firefox”, announced that they are laying off 250 employees. They blame the coronavirus pandemic for impacting the revenue.

Mitchel Baker, CEO of Mozilla Corporation and Chairman of Mozilla Foundation made the announcement. The enormous negative impact brought upon the economies by the pandemic makes it impossible for them to stick to the pre-COVID plan.

The pre-COVID plan stated that they would make the internet a better place by creating new kinds of value in Firefox, investing in innovation and creating new products, and adjusting their finances to ensure stability over the long term. Admitting that “it has been clear that Mozilla is not structured properly to create these new things,” Baker said that they have been talking openly with their employees about the need for change.

The new plan includes a significant reduction in their workforce by approximately 250 people. Baker wrote, “So going forward we will be smaller. We’ll also be organizing ourselves very differently, acting more quickly and nimbly.”

In order for Mozilla to excite people and shape the agenda of the internet, Baker mapped out five specific areas to focus: product, mindset, technology, community, and economics. For example, with their new focus on products, they will “mitigate harms or address the kinds of the problems that people face today,” and in the long run, they will build new experiences that have better values and characteristics.
