FSF, Geoffrey Knauth is elected President

August 5, Software Foundation, who promotes free software, announced the election of a new president, Geoffrey Knauth. It took 11 months for the post to be filled since the resignation of Richard M. Stallman, the founder of FSF.

Knauth has served on the FSF’s board since 1997. He has served as a Computer Science instructor at Lycoming College and is known for his contributions to GNU Objective-C Collection library.

FSF had been looking for a successor president after Stallman, the founder of FSF, stepped down the position.

In the statement describing his new position, Knauth said, “The free software movement may have started with Richard Stallman’s passion and lifelong commitment,” but “this community has grown larger over the years”, in which he suggested that the new phase has begun. He also noted that it is important to “protect and grow software that respects freedoms” and “the diverse membership of the community.”

Along with the election of the new president, FSF has also announced that Odile Benassy is added as a new director to its board. A long-time free software activist, Benassy is well known for being a project leader at GNU Edu project and for her work promoting free software in France. She is the first European to be chosen as a director of the FSF’s board.
