“Linux Mint 20 (Ulyana)” Released, with new file sharing tool

June 27, development team behind the Ubuntu-based Linux distribution Linux Mint announced the latest release “Linux Mint 20”  (codename “Ulyana”). It provides installer adopting “Cinnamon”, “Mate”, and “Xfce” as the desktop environments.

Linux Mint is a Linux distribution whose goal is to produce a modern OS that is easy to use. It offers three different desktop environments to choose from, Cinnamon, Mate, and Xfce. It focuses on usability to let users get to work right away after installing. Based on Ubuntu and Debian, it provides various packages.

The latest version Linux Mint 20 is the successor of Linux Mint released in 2018, and it offers long-term support until 2025. Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu 20.04 and uses Linux 5.4 kernel.

This release introduces a new file sharing tool “Warpinator”. In Linux Mint 6, Giver was the then file sharing tool, but when the project was discontinued, the file-sharing tool was removed from Linux Mint. Now having Warpinator to replace the empty spot, Linux Mint brings back file sharing across the local network.

This release comes with better support for NVIDIA Optimus and displaying GPU renderer in the NVIDIA Prime applet to allow users to switch graphic cards. Also, it offers full support for NVIDIA “On-Demand” profile.

The improved XAppStatuslcon can now handle mouse wheel scrolling events. With all three of the editions, Cinnamon, Mate, and Xfce, many of the tray icons were harmonized.

As to the user environment, this release has adopted version 4.6 for Cinnamon, 1.24 for Mate, and 4.14 for Xfce. Most significant is the original Cinnamon 4.6 whose performance of the Nemo file manager has been improved. It now allows users to scale resolution values between normal mode (100%) and HiDPI mode (200%).

Linux Mint project is available for download from the website.
