“Flatpak 1.8” Released, package system for Linux

June 24, development team behind “Flatpak”, a package framework for Linux applications, released its latest version “Flatpak 1.8.0”.

Flatpak is a package management framework independent of Linux distribution. It can coexist with the package management system offered by each Linux distribution, and it can run application in a sandbox environment. The generally available version, which came out in August 2018, can be used on about 25 distributions like Fedora and Ubuntu.

Flatpak 1.8 is the latest point release following version 1.7 released in March. It includes systemd unit, which makes it possible to detect plugged in USB sticks with sideload repositories. As a side note, systemd is not installed by default, and therefore needs to be installed separately. This is why gdm env.d file is no longer installed by default.

FlatpakTransaction, which is an object representing a transaction like install or update, has a new signal “install-authenticator”. Clients can handle install authenticators needed for a transaction.

It now always shows the host’s timezone data. There are many other small feature improvements and fixes included in this release.
