Mozilla announced additional three recipients of COVID-19 Solutions Fund

June 8, Mozilla announced the second three recipients of the “COVID-19 Solution Fund”, which offers financial support to open-source technology projects responding to COVID-19 pandemic. The chosen innovations span medical records, fool supplies, and PPE manufacture.

COVID-19 Solutions Fund was established by “Mozilla Open Source Support Program (MOSS)”, as a fund focused on the COVID-19. Recipients can receive up to $50,000 each. The Fund has received 164 applications from 30 countries since the announcement was made on March 31. They no longer accept applications.

Mozilla has already announced the first group of recipients in May, and this time, OpenMRS, Open Food Network, and Careables Casa Criatura Olinda were given the awards.

OpenMRS is an open-source electronic medical record system platform. It is currently used to manage over 12.6 million patients at over 5,500 health facilities in 64 countries. For example, in Kenya, emergency response team uses the OpenMRS’s COVID-19 solution to coordinate their work. $49,765 is awarded to the project.

Open Food Network provides an open-source platform that enables ethical supply chains. It enables food producers to sell directly to consumers, and wholesalers to manage purchasing groups. Already deployed in India, Brazil, Italy, the UK, and the USA, it helps to deliver food to the people in areas faced with food waste and shortages as supply chains are disrupted by the spread of the COVID-19. $45,210 is awarded to the program.

Careables Casa Criatura Olinda is a Brazil-based project who produces face shields for local hospitals based on an open-source design. Receiving $25,000, they will increase their production of the face shields. Also, the Fund approved an additional $5,000 to help the project start producing aerosol boxes for healthcare professionals.
