Nextcloud Hub v19 Released, with password-less login feature

June 3, Germany based Nextcloud announced the release of open-source content collaboration platform “Nextcloud Hub v19”. It introduces password-less login feature and performance enhancements.

Nextcloud is a content collaboration platform with security, privacy, and management features. Forking out from “ownCloud”, the project started four years ago.

In January, Nextcloud presented version 18 under a brand name “Nextcloud Hub”. This on-premise content collaboration platform is made up of online file storage “Nextcloud Files”, audio/video conference and text chat “Nextcloud Talk”, and calendar and mailing “Nextcloud Groupware”.

This latest release Nextcloud Hub v19 focuses on features for team collaboration in a distributed environment.

This release introduces password-less login, which is made possible with WebAuthm, a secure authentication W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) standard. WebAuthn is supported by Microsoft “Windows Hello”, major browsers, and hardware keys. Thanks to its collaboration with Germany based Nitrokey, Nextcloud Hub also supports hardware keys.

This release introduces new security features: automatic logout, password reuse limitations, password expiration features, and automatic account locking in response to failed login attempts.

Nextcloud Talk is added with new features like auto scale and grid view. It also allows drag-and-drop file sharing. Bringing performance and scalability improvements, it automatically scales quality depending on the number of participants. It also delivers better collaboration features, for example, users can now directly edit a document during a video conference.

This release brings better performance. Reading external SFTP storage has been improved up to five times. As it comes with the ability to use fseek in Amazon S3 storage, now users can play a video movie file without having to first download the entire file. NFS file storage now reads with greater speed.

“Deck”, a kanban app where team members can put on task cards, is integrated with calendar. This allows Deck to work in coordination with ToDO’s and deadlines on boards.

For collaboration outside the team, now it is easier to create and manage guest accounts.

It includes many other feature enhancements.
