Blender 2.83 Released, the first LTS release
June 3, the development team of open-source 3D CG creation software Blender released the latest version “Blender 2.83”. It is the first long-term support (LTS) release. While the focus is on delivering stability, it introduces new features like VR support.
“Blender 2.83” is the successor of v2.82, released in February 2019. This release is a result of Blender sticking to its promise to deliver long-term support (LTS) release every year for users who demand a stable version. This LTS release will be supported for two years with important fixes and updates for new hardware.
This release includes over 1250 bug fixes as the focus is on delivering performance and stability to major projects. It introduces initial VR support. This was made possible by implementing VR standard “OpenXR”, but as the focus is specifically on navigating around the scene in VR, its functionality is limited.
Now it allows importing and rendering OpenVDB, which is a C++ library for handling volume data. OpenVDB is a file format developed by DreamWorks Animation, used by numerous applications including Maxwell Render.
With Nvidia “OptiX AI-Accelerated Denoiser”, render engine Cycles supports denoising inside the Blender viewport.
This version also delivers the physics-enabled sculpting tool “Cloth Brush”. Grease Pencil 2D animation toolset is rewritten. This release also brings greater speed and improved integration with other Blender tools.
