May 27, Stack Overflow, who organizes community for developers, announced its annual developer survey “2020 Developer Survey”. Rust was chosen as the most beloved programming language for the fifth time in a row. Also, the results of the survey on working conditions have been announced.

Stack Overflow provides a community site for developers, with over 50 million unique users. 2020 Developer Survey is the tenth annual survey conducted by Stack Overflow. This survey was taken in February 2020, and nearly 65,000 developers took part.

With 86% of the developers, who use Rust, wanting to continue using it, “Rust” came in top of the list of most beloved programming languages. Rust is a programming language developed by Mozilla, and it held the top spot for the fifth year in a row. Stack Overflow analyzed the result that “Rust promises performance, control, memory safety, and fearless concurrency – an enticing combination, especially for systems programming.” That said, 97% of the developers who took the survey aren’t familiar with the language.

Last year, both TypeScript and Python shared the number two spot. This year, TypeScript stayed in the spot, leaving Python to fall to third place. “Kotlin” came in fourth. Jumping up from last year’s 10th place spot, Google “Go” came in fifth. This year’s 6th to 10th in respective order are “Julia”, “Dart”, “C#”, “Swift”, and “JavaScript”.

Python topped the list of most wanted programming languages, followed by “JavaScript”, “Go”, and “TypeScript” in respective order. On the other hand, the top five of the most dreaded programming languages are “VBA”, “Objective-C”, “Perl”, “Assembly”, and “C”.

They also asked developers about the working conditions for the first time. As a result, over 75% of the developers said that they “work overtime,” and as to the frequency of working overtime, “1-2 days per month but less than weekly” ranked top with 26.7%.
