Open-Source Audio Editing Software “Audacity 2.4.1” Released

May 21, the development team of Audio Editing Software “Audacity” announced the release of “Audacity 2.4”. It includes many enhancements, including the new Time Toolbar.

Audacity 2.4.1 is the latest stable version of Audacity 2.0, first released in 2012. Version 2.4.0 of the Audacity 2.4 series was released on May 16, but when a serious bug was found right after the release, the distribution has been put to a halt.

This release introduces the new Time Toolbar, by splitting off the recording/playing time from the selection toolbar. Time Toolbar is a read-only toolbar that shows the current time, and during the playback and recording, it dynamically shows the current playhead and the time of record.

As a new audio export format, Opus is added to the menu (only for Windows and Linux, and it is to be supported for macOS in the future). As a new effect, Loudness Normalization is introduced. It also includes a new analyzer to measure the RMS levels of a track.

For advanced users, who enable Spectrogram and Waveform, it introduces multi-view option, which shows Spectrogram and Waveform at the same time to eliminate the need of switching between them back and forth.

This release introduces many other feature improvements.

As a side note, the bugs found in version 2.4.0 were confirmed in Windows, macOS, and Linux, and it has been reported that they can lead to corruption or loss of an audio file. This can happen when you try to paste an audio from one project to another while having two projects open at the same time. This bug has been fixed in version 2.4.1.
