Google Chrome 83 Released, introducing Tab Groups

May 19, Google announced the release of the web browser “Google Chrome 83 (83.0.4103.61)”. It introduces feature enhancements, with Tab Groups and new extension menu. It now supports DNS over HTTPS.

The latest version Chrome 83 is the successor of version 81, released in April. Version 82 was skipped due to the effect of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

It introduces the new Tab Groups feature (only for desktops), which allows users to organize active tabs in the web browsers. By right-clicking a tab you can create a new tab group. Naming, color coding, and group collapse are also available.

For the desktop version, the UI for the security and privacy settings has been redesigned. Also, third-party cookies are blocked by default in Incognito mode. This of course can be changed by clicking the dedicated button in the address bar. It also allows you to manage cookies on a per-site basis. There is a new puzzle icon for the extensions on the toolbar. Users can use it to manage what data the extensions can access.

It is also added with support for DNS over HTTPS, which performs DNS resolution via the HTTPS protocol. This is automatically used if the DNS provider supports it, and there is also an option to let users manually configure if they want to use a specific provider.

There are in total 38 security fixes, and five of them are rated as “High”, which is the second-highest level of severity. Based on the bounty program, it is reported that $76,000 will be offered.

Google Chrome 83 will gradually roll out for Linux, macOS, Windows, and mobile (iOS, Android).
