OpenBSD 6.7 Released

May 19, OpenBSD development team released the latest version of open-source UNIX-like OS “OpenBSD 6,7”. It is available on the project website.

OpenBSD is a UNIX-like OS, whose main features are security and application portability. OpenBSD is the successor of version 6.6 released in October 2019.

While the minimum allowed number of chunks in a CONCAT volume has been reduced from 2 to 1, the number of volumes which can be generated on a single disk using bioctl has been increased from 7 to 15. These changes allow users to create greater number of partitions than before. As to daemon cron, which executes scheduled commands, flag-parsing code has been rewritten. It is now added with support for random time values.

In this version, FFS2 file system is the default for new installs. It uses 64bit timestamps and block numbers.

It also includes improvements in SMP. Functions, such as __thrsleep and __thrwakeup, are run without ERNEL_LOCK. Moreover, as a result of the enhanced AMD CPU detection, misidentification of cores is less likely to happen.

It introduces improved hardware support for arm64 and armc7. It is added with support for Raspberry Pi4 on arm64 and offers better support for Raspberry Pi3.

The security aspect has been improved. Now unveil is used in 82 userland programs to react filesystem access. With regards to vmstat, iostat, and systat, it is made possible to reduce filesystem access by using unveil.

Network capabilities are enhanced with improvements on IEEE 802.11 wireless stack and various drivers, and updated packages. It upgraded OpenSSH to version 8.3, OpenSMTPD to 6.7, LibreSSL to 3.1.1, and Mandoc to 1.14.6
