Open-Source Visualization Tool “Grafana 7.0” Released

May 18, Grafana Labs released “Grafana 7.0”, open-source software for visualizing monitoring data. It introduces enhancements on user interface and custom plugins.

Grafana offers a dashboard that graphically displays monitoring data recorded in database. It is equipped with features like metrics, log queries, visualization, alerts, and more. In regards to database that stores data that is to be visualized, it supports Graphite, Prometheus, Elasticsearch, OpenTSDB, InfluxDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and more. As data source, users can also use data stored on clouds such as Google Stackdriver, Amazon Cloudwatch, and Microsoft Azure.

The latest release Grafana 7.0 is the successor of version 6, released in February 2019. Most notable are enhancements added in user experience, development of custom plugins, and visualization.

User experience is improved with a new table panel that allows horizontal scrolling and column resize, and the new auto layout mode makes it easier to resize panels. Also. renewed icons enable users to operate intuitively.

The new data model lets users define specific data configurations with attributes. Now that users are provided with a consistent way to define data sources, usability has been improved.

Plugins Platform is added with new tools that simplify development and maintenance of plug-ins, and provide tutorials and new components. Also, React components, used in plugins offered by Grafana, now can be used by third-party developers without modifications, to let them develop plugins that adapt to Grafana’s user interface.

Newly added feature “Transformations” can change non-time series data into tables without any customization or additional overhead. It can combine non-series data with any other data in Grafana. Tracing now supports Jaeger data source.

Newly introduced data inspection feature “Panel Inspector” enables simple manipulation of raw data, such as join, view, and query.

It is added with support for AWS CloudWatch Logs, and there are many other enhancements.
