21st Major Release of “OpenStack Ussuri” with Enhanced Security and Reliability
May 13, OpenStack community announced the release of “OpenStack Ussuri”, open-source cloud infrastructure. This 21st release introduces enhanced security and reliability.
OpenStack is an open-source cloud computing infrastructure that can build cloud services. According to OpenStack, it powers 75 public cloud data centers and thousands of private clouds. In some cases, it is even used as a system with over 10 million compute cores.
As OpenStack follows a release cycle which happens every April and October, OpenStack Ussuri is the latest version following “OpenStack Train” released in October 2019. It is the 21st release since the first release in October 2010. It is reported that there have been over 24,000 code changes contributed by more than 1,000 developers from 188 companies and organizations.
This latest version has its focus on enhancing the reliability of the core infrastructure layer, improving security and encryption function, and introducing supports for new use cases.
Thanks to the new cold-migration support added to “Nova” compute service, the workload migration from hardware is made easier. It also enables server resizing between Nova cells. As integration with Nova has been completed in “Cyborg”, (hardware acceleration management) users can now launch server instances via Nova and manage accelerators with Cyborg.
Bare metal service “Ironic” now supports hardware retirement workflow. It enables automation decommission in managed clouds.
KubernetesはZun APIを使ってpodを構築できるという。Container service “Zun” now includes support for Kubernetes CRI runtime. Zun uses this to realize the pod concept. Kubernetes can create pods by using Zun API.
“Kolla”, containerized deployment of OpenStack, now brings TLS initial support for backend API service. It enables end-to-end encryption of API traffic. Currently, it supports Keystone.
IPv6 support is added by “Kuryr”, a bridge between OpenStack and container network. Load balancer “Octavia” can now deploy load-balancers in specific availability zones.
OpenStack Ussuri is available on the project website.
