Google Chrome 79 released, With WebXR Device API

December 10, Google announced the release of Chrome 79.0.3945.79 (Chrome 79), the latest version of the Google web browser Chrome.

Google Chrome 79 is the latest version, following version 78, which was released at the beginning of November. To enhance security, password checkup tool has been added. It warns users when they try to use a password that has been compromised in a data breach. Another implementation of security enhancement is that with Safe Browsing setting, Chrome checks URLs in real time against the blacklist, which lists up malicious sites. Tab freezing is another added security feature. It automatically stops loading inactive tabs to reduce CPU usage.

WebXR Device API, an API for accessing VR and AR devices, is enabled. It supports headsets such as Oculus VR, Steam VR (OpenVR), and Windows Mixed Reality.

When Chrome Sync is enabled, and the same Google account is used on the Android device, clipboard can be syncronized. Support for Web Bluetooth Scanning has been added.

As to development related changes, CSS related features have been enhanced. Also, TLS 1.0/1.1 are deprecated.

A lot of bugs have been fixed. As to security related fixes, Google spent at least $80,000 on the bounty program according to what’s been reported.

Chrome 79 supports Linux, MacOS, Windows, and Android. It is rolling out in the course of coming weeks.
