Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.1 Released, Supports Live Kernel Patches

On November 5, Red Hat released Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8.1, a new Linux distribution. With full support for live kernel patches, there are additional fortifications.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.1 is the first point release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 series. This is based on the previous announcement that Red Hat will stick to a release cycle of every six months.

One of the new features is the full support for live kernel patches, which is a mechanism to update kernels without reboot. Container-centric SELinux profiles are also included. It allows building more customized security policies to control the way the containerized services access host system resources.

The new management-related feature is the mechanism which uses Red Hat Insights, included in RHEL subscriptions, to respond to system troubles like configuration problems before production environment gets affected.

Red Hat Insights has over 1000 rules to operate on premises or on public clouds such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure, and they support workload analytics like SAP HANA and Microsoft SQL Server.

Another new feature called Red Hat Enterprise Linus System Roles makes it possible to set up RHEL subsystem for handling specific functions like storage and networking. Expanding the existing Ansible system roles for RHEL 8, it will complement automated configuration. There are also enhancements added to features for hybrid cloud application development.
